Question 1

What is Mediobanca?

Accepted Answer

Mediobanca is an Italian investment bank operating a branch in Paris, France. Founded as Italy's premier medium-term credit institution, it has evolved into a diversified international banking group specializing in Corporate & Investment Banking, Wealth Management, Consumer Finance, and Insurance.

The bank is recognized as one of Italy's leading investment banks with a strong presence across continental Europe, serving corporate clients, institutional investors, and high-net-worth individuals through offices in Milan, London, Madrid, Luxembourg, Paris, Frankfurt, Monaco, Geneva, and New York.

Question 2

When was Mediobanca founded?

Accepted Answer

Mediobanca was founded on April 10, 1946, at the initiative of Raffaele Mattioli (then CEO of Banca Commerciale Italiana) and Enrico Cuccia to facilitate the post-World War II reconstruction of Italian industry. The three founding banks were Banca Commerciale Italiana, Credito Italiano, and Banco di Roma, all subsidiaries of IRI, Italy's former public holding company.

The bank was established to provide medium-term financing for manufacturers and establish a direct relationship between the banking sector and the investment needs of industry reorganization. Enrico Cuccia, who led Mediobanca from 1946 to 1982 and served as Honorary President until his death in 2000, shaped the institution into Italy's leading investment bank.

Question 3

Where is Mediobanca headquartered?

Accepted Answer

Mediobanca is headquartered in Milan, Italy, at Piazzetta Enrico Cuccia, 1. The Paris branch office is located at 23 Avenue D'Iéna, 75116 Paris 08, France.

Question 4

Where does Mediobanca operate?

Accepted Answer

Within France, Mediobanca operates through its Paris branch, which serves as a key hub for the bank's pan-European Corporate & Investment Banking platform. The Paris office provides Italian and local customers with corporate and investment banking services including advisory, corporate lending, debt capital markets, and equity capital markets.

The Paris branch was significantly strengthened in 2019 when Mediobanca acquired Messier Maris & Associés, a top-tier French corporate finance house with approximately 40 professionals specializing in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). The French subsidiary competes with institutions like Lazard and Rothschild, leveraging Mediobanca's substantial balance sheet (€75 billion) to position itself as a privileged advisor to CAC 40 and SBF 120 companies.

Question 5

Accepted Answer

Digital Innovation: Pioneer in digital banking through CheBanca! (launched in 2008 as Italy's first native digital bank, rebranded as Mediobanca Premier in 2024), combining multichannel distribution with sophisticated wealth management technology.

Specialized Market Position: Strong focus on serving Italian entrepreneurial families and mid-to-large corporate clients with cross-border needs, offering integrated solutions for both personal and business wealth management.

Question 7

What type of financial institution is Mediobanca?

Accepted Answer

Mediobanca's Paris office is classified as an EEA Branch (CRD_EEA_BRA) under European Banking Authority regulations. This designation indicates it operates as a branch of the Italian parent institution Mediobanca S.p.A., authorized to provide banking services across the European Economic Area.

The parent institution is a Credit Institution (Banca di credito finanziario) in Italy, which translates to an investment bank specializing in medium-to-long-term credit and corporate finance. In the French market, Mediobanca functions as a banque d'investissement (investment bank) and banque d'affaires (merchant bank), providing wholesale banking services rather than retail deposit-taking.

This branch structure allows Mediobanca to leverage its Italian banking license while serving French corporate and institutional clients with the full range of investment banking services under ECB supervision.
