National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) is a Pakistani government-owned multinational commercial bank operating as a foreign branch in Afghanistan. It is a subsidiary of the State Bank of Pakistan and functions as one of two foreign bank branches licensed by Da Afghanistan Bank, the central bank of Afghanistan. NBP holds the distinction of being the first foreign bank to establish operations in Afghanistan since 2003.
The bank operates under a sovereign guarantee on deposits from the Government of Pakistan under the Bank Nationalization Act of 1974, providing an additional layer of security for its Afghan operations.
