However, the group's history extends back over 200 years to 1822 with the founding of Société Générale de Belgique in Brussels.

The French predecessors of BNP Paribas were born in 1848 when Comptoir National d'Escompte de Paris (CNEP) and Comptoir National d'Escompte de Mulhouse were created during France's economic crisis and political revolution. Paribas itself was created in 1872 from the merger of Banque de Paris and an international financial company with operations across the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and France.

BNP Paribas has been present in Italy since 1967 as BNP and since 1979 as Paribas, making it operational in the Italian market for over 50 years. The bank significantly expanded its Italian presence in 2006 through the acquisition of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL), Italy's sixth-largest bank at the time.

BNP Paribas operates in Italy as an EEA Branch (CRDEEABRA) of the French parent institution. As an EEA branch, BNP Paribas Italy benefits from the European passporting framework, which allows banks authorized in one EEA country to provide services across the entire European Economic Area. The branch was officially authorized on September 26, 2014, under this regulatory framework.
