Question 1

What is Citadele?

Accepted Answer

Citadele is the Lithuanian branch of AS Citadele banka, a leading Baltic banking group headquartered in Latvia. Operating as an EEA branch in Lithuania, Citadele provides comprehensive retail, SME, and corporate banking services to Lithuanian customers.

The branch is part of a larger banking group focused on becoming the primary bank of choice for retail and small business customers across the Baltic states.

Question 2

When was Citadele founded?

Accepted Answer

The Citadele Lithuanian branch was authorized on February 11, 2019, as an EEA branch of the Latvian parent institution. The parent bank, AS Citadele banka, was established in 2010 when the viable assets of Parex Bank were transferred to the newly created institution following Latvia's 2008 financial crisis.

The name "Citadele" derives from the Italian word "citadella," meaning a small city or powerful fortress, symbolizing the bank's role as a strong financial center. The parent institution was privatized in 2015 when an international investor group led by Ripplewood Advisors acquired 75% ownership, with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) holding the remaining 25%.
