Question 1

What is Cecabank Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Cecabank Portugal (officially Cecabank, S.A. - Sucursal em Portugal) is the Portuguese branch of the Spanish wholesale banking institution Cecabank. Operating from Lisbon, it specializes in securities depositary, custody, and settlement services for institutional clients. The branch serves collective investment institutions (CIIs), pension funds, and venture capital firms in Portugal.

Question 2

When was Cecabank Portugal founded?

Accepted Answer

Cecabank Portugal began operations on September 1, 2018, as a branch of Cecabank, S.A., the Spanish parent bank headquartered in Madrid. The branch was established to extend Cecabank's specialized securities services into the Portuguese market, leveraging the European Union's passporting rights that allow banks authorized in one EU member state to operate branches in other EU countries.

Question 3

Where is Cecabank Portugal headquartered?

Accepted Answer

Cecabank Portugal is located in Lisbon at Avenida Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco, Torre 1, Piso 6 - Sala 3, 1070-101 Lisboa. The branch operates under the supervision of Banco de Portugal and the Portuguese securities regulator CMVM (Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários).

Question 4

Where does Cecabank Portugal operate?

Accepted Answer

Cecabank Portugal operates exclusively in Portugal, providing services from its single location in Lisbon. As a branch of a Spanish credit institution, it serves institutional clients throughout Portuguese territory without maintaining multiple physical offices. The branch focuses on wholesale banking services rather than retail operations.

Question 5

What services does Cecabank Portugal offer?

Accepted Answer

Cecabank Portugal offers specialized securities services including depositary functions, custody services, and settlement operations. The branch serves as a depositary for Portuguese investment funds (both UCITS and alternative investment funds), pension funds, and venture capital firms.

Services include safekeeping of financial instruments, settlement of securities transactions, cash management for investment vehicles, regulatory reporting, and compliance oversight. Cecabank Portugal works closely with institutional clients to ensure adherence to Portuguese and European regulatory requirements, providing neutral and independent depositary services with no conflicts of interest.

Question 6

What makes Cecabank Portugal unique?

Accepted Answer

Cecabank Portugal benefits from the expertise and independence of its Spanish parent, which is a leading depositary bank in the Iberian market. The branch provides highly customized services tailored to each client's specific operational needs and investment strategies.

Cecabank's independence as a specialized wholesale bank—without competing retail or asset management businesses—ensures it operates as a neutral service provider. The branch actively collaborates with clients on regulatory developments and assists in navigating complex compliance requirements. This specialized focus and extensive knowledge of institutional client operations distinguish Cecabank Portugal in the Portuguese securities services market.

Question 7

What type of financial institution is Cecabank Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Cecabank Portugal is an EEA branch (Sucursal) of a European Union credit institution. It operates under the banking license of its parent company Cecabank, S.A., which is regulated by the Banco de España and the European Central Bank. The branch is supervised by Banco de Portugal for local operations and registered with CMVM for securities-related activities.

As a branch of an EU bank, Cecabank Portugal does not participate in a separate deposit guarantee scheme, as deposits (if any) would be covered by the Spanish deposit guarantee scheme of the parent institution. However, given its wholesale institutional focus, the branch primarily handles securities and custody services rather than traditional deposit-taking activities.
