This Portuguese branch, based in Amadora, provides comprehensive financial solutions to support the sale and ownership of Volkswagen Group vehicles in Portugal, including brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA, and others. The branch is part of Volkswagen Bank GmbH, headquartered in Braunschweig, Germany, which is one of Europe's leading automotive banks.

Question 2

When was Volkswagen Financial Services founded?

Accepted Answer

The Volkswagen Financial Services operation in Portugal was established as a branch of Volkswagen Bank GmbH, which was founded in 1949 in Germany. The Portuguese branch was authorized to operate on April 11, 2019, as an EEA (European Economic Area) branch.

Volkswagen Bank GmbH itself has a long history dating back to post-World War II reconstruction in Germany, when it was established to support vehicle financing for Volkswagen customers. The bank evolved from serving primarily domestic German customers to becoming an international automotive financial services provider with branches and subsidiaries across Europe and beyond.

The Portuguese operation represents Volkswagen Financial Services' expansion into the Iberian market, providing localized financial solutions while leveraging the resources and expertise of the broader Volkswagen Bank GmbH Group.

Question 7

What type of financial institution is Volkswagen Financial Services?

Accepted Answer

Volkswagen Financial Services in Portugal operates as an EEA branch (CRDEEABRA) of Volkswagen Bank GmbH, a German credit institution. This means it is not a separate legal entity but rather an extension of the German parent bank operating within Portugal under European banking passport provisions.

The parent institution, Volkswagen Bank GmbH, is a credit institution (Kreditinstitut) organized under German banking law and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG. As such, it is classified as a captive finance company or automotive bank, specializing in providing financial services related to vehicle sales and ownership.

The branch operates under the supervision of the European Central Bank (ECB) as its competent authority, reflecting the systemic importance of the Volkswagen Bank GmbH Group within the European banking system. As a branch of a German bank, customer deposits (if any) would typically be covered by the German deposit guarantee scheme rather than the Portuguese system.

Question 8

What is the relationship between the Portuguese branch and Volkswagen Group dealerships?

Accepted Answer

The Portuguese branch maintains close collaborative relationships with authorized Volkswagen Group dealers throughout Portugal. Dealers serve as the primary distribution channel for automotive financing products, with dealer sales staff trained to present financing options to customers during the vehicle purchase process.

The branch provides dealers with inventory financing (floor planning) that enables them to stock vehicles without tying up excessive working capital. This symbiotic relationship ensures dealers have the financial resources to maintain adequate inventory while customers receive competitive financing offers at the point of sale.

Question 9

How does the branch fit into Volkswagen Financial Services' global operations?

Accepted Answer

The Portuguese branch is part of Volkswagen Bank GmbH's extensive international network, which includes branches in France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and other countries. This network approach allows Volkswagen Financial Services to serve customers across Europe while maintaining centralized risk management, treasury operations, and strategic direction.

The branch benefits from shared technology platforms, standardized products, and centralized resources while adapting offerings to meet Portuguese market conditions and customer preferences. It contributes to the group's overall portfolio of approximately €44 billion in loans and receivables related to vehicle financing across its international operations.
