Question 7

What type of financial institution is BNP Paribas?

Accepted Answer

BNP Paribas S.A., Sucursal en España is classified as an EEA Branch of a Credit Institution (CRDEEABRA) under European banking regulations. This designation means it operates as a branch of the parent French credit institution BNP Paribas S.A., which is headquartered in Paris.

As an EEA branch, it benefits from the European Union's single banking license (passporting rights), allowing it to provide banking services in Spain under the supervision of both the European Central Bank (as the competent authority) and Spanish regulators. The branch is not independently capitalized but operates as an extension of the parent institution's balance sheet.

In Spain's banking terminology, BNP Paribas functions as a sucursal bancaria extranjera (foreign bank branch), specializing primarily in corporate and institutional banking services, along with specialized financial services through various subsidiaries. Unlike a traditional Spanish retail bank (banco minorista), it focuses on serving corporate clients, institutions, and specialized market segments through its diversified business lines.
