About Banca Popolare di Sondrio in Italy
Banca Popolare di Sondrio (BPS or BPSO) is a major Italian bank based in Sondrio, Lombardy. Founded in 1871, it is one of Italy's oldest cooperative banks and ranks as the 12th largest bank in Italy with a market share of 1.68% and total assets of approximately €51.4 billion as of 2023. The bank is included in the FTSE Italia Mid Cap Index and has been designated as a Significant Institution under European Banking Supervision, directly supervised by the European Central Bank (ECB) since late 2014. As of 2023, the bank operated 356 branches throughout Italy and employed 3,033 people.
In February 2025, BPER Banca launched a €4.3 billion takeover bid for Banca Popolare di Sondrio, acquiring a 58.49% majority stake by July 2025. In November 2025, both banks approved a merger plan scheduled for completion in April 2026, with Banca Popolare di Sondrio to be absorbed into BPER Banca.
