Question 7

What type of financial institution is Caisse Desjardins de Lac-Mégantic—Le Granit?

Accepted Answer

Caisse Desjardins de Lac-Mégantic—Le Granit is a caisse populaire, which is the French-language term for a credit union in Quebec. In Canadian financial terminology, caisses populaires are financial cooperatives that function similarly to credit unions in other provinces but are specifically rooted in Quebec's francophone cooperative tradition.

As a member of the Desjardins Group, this caisse is part of a network of nearly 200 caisses operating over 579 service points across Quebec and Ontario. The cooperative structure means the institution is democratically controlled by its members, who become part-owners by purchasing a share (historically set at $5 since 1906) and who share in the caisse's surplus earnings through patronage allocations.

Caisses populaires are regulated under Quebec's Act respecting financial services cooperatives and are distinct from chartered banks, though they provide comparable banking services. The Desjardins Movement, with assets exceeding $175 billion, is the largest cooperative financial group in Canada and serves over seven million members and clients.
