Question 7

What type of financial institution is Caisse Desjardins de l'Est de Drummond?

Accepted Answer

Caisse Desjardins de l'Est de Drummond is a caisse populaire, which is the Quebec French term for a credit union. In the Canadian financial system, caisses populaires are cooperative financial institutions that operate under provincial legislation.

As a credit union, it is fundamentally different from chartered banks. It is owned by its members (account holders) rather than shareholders, operates as a not-for-profit cooperative, and prioritizes member service and community benefit over profit maximization. Members have voting rights in governance, regardless of their account balance, following the cooperative principle of "one member, one vote."

The caisse is part of the Desjardins Group federation, which provides centralized services, technology infrastructure, regulatory compliance support, and financial stability through the Fédération des caisses Desjardins du Québec. This federation structure distinguishes Quebec's caisse system from credit unions in other Canadian provinces.

Deposits at Desjardins caisses are insured by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), Quebec's financial regulatory authority, providing member deposit protection similar to CDIC insurance at banks.
