Question 6

What makes SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus unique?

Accepted Answer

SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus distinguishes itself through several key characteristics. The bank demonstrates exceptional profitability metrics, achieving higher net interest margins, a greater share of fee income in revenues, and stronger cost efficiency compared to peer institutions of similar size in Norway.

The bank's focus on mortgage lending is noteworthy, with its retail loan portfolio predominantly consisting of mortgage loans, and 99% of these mortgages maintained within 80% loan-to-value (LTV) ratios, indicating conservative and prudent lending practices. This approach has resulted in robust loss performance with loan losses of only 0-3 basis points in recent years.

Membership in the SpareBank 1 Alliance provides significant advantages, allowing the bank to offer competitive products, achieve economies of scale in development projects and compliance, and access shared platforms for IT operations, system development, and brand management. The bank can transfer loans to the Alliance's jointly-owned covered-bond companies, representing approximately 31% of total lending, which enhances funding flexibility.

Unlike many comparable banks in the Alliance, SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus has strategically chosen to focus on its core strengths and has refrained from entering the accounting services market. Despite this, the bank generates a higher share of fees and commissions than similar-sized peers, demonstrating effective revenue diversification.

The bank's ownership structure is also distinctive—unlike most Norwegian savings banks, the bank's equity belongs almost entirely to the owners rather than being held in foundation structures, providing more direct ownership alignment.

Question 7

What type of financial institution is SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus?

Accepted Answer

SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus is classified as a sparebank (savings bank), which is a specific type of credit institution in Norway. Savings banks in Norway have a long tradition dating back to the 19th century and were originally established to promote savings and provide credit to local communities.

As a regional savings bank, the institution primarily serves retail customers (74% of its loan portfolio excluding transferred loans, 81% including transferred loans) while also maintaining a well-diversified commercial lending book. The bank is regulated by the Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanstilsynet) and participates in Norway's deposit guarantee scheme (NO_BSI).

The bank operates as an independent member of the SpareBank 1 Alliance through Samarbeidende Sparebanker AS, which allows it to maintain local decision-making authority while benefiting from the alliance's collective resources and scale. This hybrid model combines the strengths of local banking relationships with the capabilities of a major financial group.

Question 8

What is the SpareBank 1 Alliance and how does it benefit customers?

Accepted Answer

The SpareBank 1 Alliance is Norway's second-largest financial group in terms of assets, consisting of 12 independent savings banks that cooperate on branding, product development, and operational platforms. Founded in 1996, the alliance operates through the holding company SpareBank 1 Gruppen AS, which is jointly owned by the participating banks.

For customers of SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus, alliance membership means access to a broader range of products and services than a standalone regional bank could typically offer. These include mutual funds through ODIN Forvaltning, life insurance through SpareBank 1 Livsforsikring, general insurance through SpareBank 1 Skadeforsikring, credit cards through SpareBank 1 Medlemskort, real estate brokerage through EiendomsMegler 1, and securities services through First Securities.

The alliance enables individual member banks to compete effectively with Norway's largest financial institutions while maintaining their regional identity, local decision-making, and community focus. This structure allows SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus to combine the personal service and regional expertise of a local bank with the product sophistication and technological capabilities of a national financial group.

Question 9

What is the bank's market position and financial strength?

Accepted Answer

SpareBank 1 Østfold Akershus maintains a strong financial position with very strong pre-provision profitability driven by higher net interest margins and superior cost efficiency compared to peers. The bank has consistently demonstrated robust credit quality with exceptionally low loan losses—0 basis points in 2017 and only 3 basis points in 2018—reflecting prudent lending standards and effective risk management.

The bank's lending portfolio totals approximately NOK 8.7 billion transferred to covered-bond companies, plus additional direct lending, making it a significant financial institution within its regional market. The bank's equity capital certificates are publicly traded on the Oslo Stock Exchange, providing transparency and market discipline.

With a Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio well above regulatory requirements and strong liquidity supported by its ability to transfer loans to the Alliance's covered-bond companies, the bank maintains substantial financial buffers. The bank operates in one of Norway's most cyclically stable regions, and its loan portfolio is characterized by good credit quality, predominantly secured by residential mortgages with conservative LTV ratios.
