About Crédit Foncier in France
Crédit Foncier is a French specialized financial institution that focused on real estate financing and was a subsidiary of Groupe BPCE. Founded in 1852 as France's first mortgage bank, it became a historic pillar of French real estate finance. The institution specialized in residential mortgage lending, particularly for first-time homebuyers and low-to-moderate income households through subsidized loan programs.
Affectionately known as "La vieille dame de la rue des Capucines" (The Old Lady of Rue des Capucines) by employees and clients, Crédit Foncier held a unique position as one of France's last standalone real estate financing institutions. While the bank ceased commercial lending operations in February 2019, it continues to exist as a legal entity managing its existing loan portfolio until maturity and providing advisory services to BPCE Group entities.
