Question 2

When was Raiffeisenbank Montfort founded?

Accepted Answer

The roots of Raiffeisenbank Montfort trace back to the late 19th century, inspired by the self-help cooperative principles of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen. The bank was originally founded in 1899 in Feldkirch, though its history encompasses multiple predecessor institutions.

Following devastating Rhine floods in 1888 and widespread poverty in the Vorarlberg region, local leaders Franz Michael Felder, Wendelin Rädler, and Johann Kohler established savings and loan cooperatives to provide affordable credit and agricultural supplies to farmers. The first of these was the Spar- und Darlehenskassenverein Götzis in 1890, followed by cooperatives in Rankweil (1895), Feldkirch (1899), and several other communities.

These independent cooperatives gradually merged over the decades. In September 2020, three successful Raiffeisen banks—Raiffeisenbank Rankweil, Raiffeisenbank Feldkirch, and Raiffeisenbank am Kumma—officially merged to form the modern Raiffeisenbank Montfort eGen. This consolidation created the largest Raiffeisen bank in Vorarlberg.
