SOJALES operates within Paraguay's robust cooperative tradition, which has been fundamental to the country's agricultural development. Agricultural production cooperatives in Paraguay play a crucial role in supporting small and medium-scale producers who might otherwise struggle to access markets, credit, and technical assistance independently.

SOJALES is classified as a Cooperativa de Producción (Production Cooperative) under Paraguayan law. Production cooperatives in Paraguay are regulated by Law No. 438/94 "Cooperatives" and Law No. 5.501/15, which modified aspects of the original cooperative law.

According to INCOOP's typification system, cooperatives are classified into Types A, B, and C based on their asset size. For production and savings and credit cooperatives, the classifications are: Type A (assets greater than 50 billion Guaraníes), Type B (assets between 5 billion and 50 billion Guaraníes), and Type C (assets less than 5 billion Guaraníes).

Production cooperatives differ from savings and credit cooperatives (Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito) in that their primary focus is on agricultural production, commercialization, and related services rather than financial intermediation. However, some production cooperatives in Paraguay operate as multiactive cooperatives (Cooperativas Multiactivas), offering both production support and financial services to their members.
