Question 7

What type of financial institution is El Misionero Ltda.?

Accepted Answer

El Misionero Ltda. is a Cooperativa Multiactiva (Multiactive Cooperative). In Paraguay's cooperative classification system, multiactive cooperatives are distinguished from specialized cooperatives by their ability to operate across multiple economic sectors simultaneously.

Unlike pure savings and credit cooperatives (Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito) that focus exclusively on financial services, or production cooperatives (Cooperativas de Producción) that concentrate on agricultural or industrial production, multiactive cooperatives integrate various services including transportation, production, commerce, consumption, and other services.

This institutional model reflects the cooperative principles of mutual aid and member service, operating as a member-owned and democratically controlled organization. All cooperatives in Paraguay are regulated by INCOOP, which classifies them into Types A, B, or C based on asset size and operational scope.
